About us
Egmont Alpaca Stud is owned and operated by Beryl Thomas and Glenn Skedgwell, who are both very enthusiastic about the alpaca enterprise.
We started in 2002 with 6 breeding females and our herd soon grew to 90 animals. We have recently sold quite a number of alpacas, and we now aim to keep a nucleus of around 35 -40 breeding females, along with 10 stud males and sell excess stock each year.
Our stud males keep us busy but we enjoy this immensely because it is always nice to catch up with happenings in our clients' lives and view their new arrivals.
Glenn and Beryl are both from farming backgrounds therefore animal husbandry and pasture management come naturally to them. We have both attended neo natal courses, an alpaca evaluation course, annual alpaca conferences both in New Zealand and Australia and keep up to date with new initiatives within the industry both in New Zealand and Internationally. In May 2010 we attended the World Alpaca Congress in Spain.
We hold training and education days at Egmont Stud. To date we have hosted two neo natal clinics, an Alpaca Manager training day, two fleece sorting days to help local breeders prepare a fleece for carding/selling and preparing a fleece for showing.
Beryl enjoys all things alpaca but has a special interest in fleece. She has recently become a qualified wool classer - one of only two alpaca breeders in New Zealand to obtain this.
Breeding Goals
Our breeding goals are to produce a medium size alpaca with excellent conformation, carrying a fine, soft handling, dense fleece, with a high frequency, deep, crimp style and uniform coverage throughout the body. We are delighted with the outcome of our breeding combinations but still have further refinements to achieve. We have been involved with the AGE (Across Herd Genetic Evaluation) programme since its inception, and are strong supporters of it.
